We were a bit slow to catch on to Daisy May Cooper’s latest show. The first series premiered in 2022, and nearly three years later, the second series aired in February. Cooper gave birth halfway through filming the second series, which may explain the long wait between them. Each series consists of six 30-minute episodes, making it perfect for a weekend binge – especially for those who’ve yet to give it a watch (like us!).
The story follows Nic, mum to Ollie, who lives in a village with her husband, Dan. It’s not the life you’d expect for someone like Nic – a loud, vibrant character much like Cooper herself. But cracks begin to show as she harbours a secret that could unravel her seemingly perfect life. She soon meets new school mum Jen, played by Selin Hizli (who also co-writes the show with Cooper), and their friendship quickly intensifies. Jen, too, is hiding parts of herself that are slowly revealed across both series, leaving viewers questioning the sincerity of their bond and Jen’s true motives.
What makes the show so appealing is that it defies expectations. It blends comedy, thriller, and drama in a way that feels surprisingly light-hearted, despite the serious consequences faced by its characters. While it’s not laugh-out-loud funny, there are jokes to suit a wide range of viewers – whether you enjoy kids swearing, awkward humour, or niche references to The Real Housewives franchises, there’s something here to make you chuckle.
Cooper continues to create delightfully flawed characters with the help of Hizli. Though their actions might suggest otherwise, you can’t help but root for Nic, even as you eagerly await the next mess she finds herself in. The series has already picked up BAFTA and RTS nominations, with Lenny Rush (who plays Ollie) winning the former for Best Male Comedy Performance. Both series ended on cliffhangers that leave you wanting more, and with any luck, a third series will be commissioned – Cooper has firmly cemented her place in the landscape of British comedy.
‘Am I Being Unreasonable?’ is available to stream in full on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Hulu overseas.
