Madonna has spent the last few years working on a film adaptation of her life story. Following the success of music biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, and the more recent Bob Dylan project, a Madonna biopic seemed like a natural next step for one of pop’s most iconic figures.
She’s documented much of the journey and its challenges on her social media, revealing frustrations with studio executives who reportedly urged her to scale the project back. True to form, Madonna refused to compromise, and the original film was ultimately scrapped.
However, Deadline now reports that the biopic may be reimagined for the streaming era, with Netflix stepping in to develop a potential limited series. Madonna is said to be collaborating with producer Shawn Levy, known for hit shows like Stranger Things. Details remain scarce, Deadline notes that representatives have declined to comment a given really as the project is said to be in very early stages.
It’s unclear which chapter of Madonna’s life the series will focus on, though with such a rich and rebellious legacy, there’s no shortage of material. The project is rumoured to be a limited series, raising the question: how do you fit a career as groundbreaking as Madonna’s into just a handful of episodes?
Julia Garner (pictured recently with Madonna above) was originally cast in the now cancelled film and is still tipped to portray the Queen of Pop, following reports of a rigorous “Madonna boot camp” audition process.
